Mandatory Safety Testing for Illinois Commercial Properties
Elevator compliance in Illinois isn’t optional — and falling behind on mandatory safety requirements can expose your building to code violations, operational shutdowns, and significant liability. The Illinois State Fire Marshal and the City of Chicago require annual safety reviews and periodic testing to ensure elevator systems meet current standards.
At Carlsen’s Elevator Service, we help commercial property owners and facility managers navigate these requirements, determine whether their systems are compliant, and take action when upgrades or testing are needed. Contact us today for a free consultation.

Mandatory Category Testing
Illinois law and City of Chicago ordinance require all commercial elevators to undergo periodic category testing to verify that safety-critical components are functioning within required standards. These tests are not optional — they are mandatory inspections with defined schedules that building owners are responsible for meeting.
Category 1 Testing
Required annually. Category 1 testing verifies the operational safety of your elevator’s core components and safety devices under normal operating conditions. This test must be completed and documented every year to maintain compliance.
Category 5 Testing
Required every five years. Category 5 testing is a more comprehensive examination that includes full-load safety tests and the activation of governor and safety mechanisms under controlled conditions. It is the most thorough mandatory inspection in the testing cycle and requires qualified technicians to perform and certify the results.
